Use voice commands to control music and podcasts with Amazon Alexa!

I don't even know where to start. This, local files no longer linking to songs in the database (they kinda do but you can't tell in the local files tab itself), removing the lyrics app (and apps in general), notifications for albums added to artist pages gone, the feature where you see a list of friends listening to insert artist and so on.

Get started

  4. Hi, brand new Spotify Premium user here so bear with me! If I play music through the 'Music' app on my iPad and then switch to another app e.g. 'Safari' or 'Mail' then the 'Music' app keeps playing music. However, Spotify does not - it stops playing if I'm not actually in the Spotify app itself.

Download the Alexa app, open it, and link your Spotify account with these steps:

  1. Tap the menu in the top-left.
  2. Tap Settings, then Music & Podcasts.
  3. Select Spotify, then Link account to Alexa.
  4. Enter your Spotify account details.

Set Spotify as your default service for music and podcasts so you don’t need to specify “on Spotify” at the end of your voice commands to play music:

  1. Tap the menu in the top-left.
  2. Tap Settings, then Music & Podcasts.
  3. Tap Choose default music services.
    Note: To set Spotify as your default podcast service, tap Choose default podcast service.
  4. Select Spotify and tap DONE.

Note: You still need to say “on Spotify” at the end of commands to play podcasts.

Now just ask Alexa to play something! E.g. 'Alexa, play Discover Weekly'. Check out the Amazon help site for supported languages.

Don’t worry if your car’s not listed, you can check with the manufacturer, and there are plenty of other ways to play in the car listed below.

Car view

When you connect your phone to your car’s Bluetooth, car view automatically turns on.

You see larger, driver-friendly icons in the Now Playing view, and you can quickly change what plays with Choose Music at the bottom of the screen.

To disable Car view:

  1. Tap Home .
  2. Tap Settings .
  3. Under Car, switch Carview off.

You may be able to use an AUX or USB cable to directly connect your mobile or tablet to your car.

Note: Check with your car’s manufacturer to make sure you have the correct cable.
